How to Start a Lifestyle Blog: 2019 Guide for Beginners

text reads how to start a lifestyle blog from scratchToday is the day! Are you ready?

We’re going learn to how to start a lifestyle blog and make money with it – as soon as day one!

We’ll start by setting up a self-hosted website through Siteground who offers the best self-hosting experience around!

Why and why Siteground?

I’ve had experience with various website builders so, I can honestly say that self-hosting is the only way to go if you want to make real money blogging!

This is exactly how I did it!

Before transferring my site to Siteground for self-hosting, I also previously tried Wix due its reputation for being easy to use!

Wix is a drag and drop website builder but I found the features very limited and the website building process frustrating and time consuming.

From what saw, I think Wix is better suited for artists who want to display their portfolios and/or other creatives and business owners who have no intention of monetizing their site. was a different story!

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links and I could earn a commission if you sign up using them. This comes at no additional cost to you and all recommendations are based on my own experience. vs

WordPress itself is a website building tool. is where you download and install the free software you’ll use to build your site on your web server of choice – you don’t need to actually visit this site though as your web host will usually offer one-click installation with your hosting plan. is a one stop shop that takes care of the software and hosting for you.

But when self-hosting a blog on Siteground starts at $3.95 a month (this link gives you 65% off all plans on terms of 12 months or more), the premium price tag of $25 a month for the exact same features is really hard to justify!

I ditched because of the price and the limited monetization options available, among other things.

Trying to make money on was a mistake.

I earned a grand total of something like 6 cents over the course of seven months with their AdWords program – a program which you need to pay to use.

This year alone, I’ve earned hundreds of dollars on Google AdSense… and qualifying didn’t cost me a thing! It was 100% FREE!

Own Your Content by Choosing Self-Hosting

Bloggers don’t own their content on – you can read more about this in their TOS here.

So why would anyone choose

All-in-one is perceived as easier.

When I tried, I was a busy mom with a newborn baby and knew nothing about computers, blogging, or how to make money online – I was learning how to be a mom, I didn’t have time to learn how to do all of that technical stuff too!

Sound familiar?

In reality, not having access to tools and customization options really limited my growth!

And looking back, there honestly wasn’t even that much of a difference besides the dashboards and price.

Starting a blog was the best decision I ever made for our family!

Between blogging and social media, I now earn a full-time income working at home and anywhere else I want – and I get to teach you how to do it too!

What does your happiness look like?

For me, it was about being my own boss and not missing out on my little one growing up!

Maybe you have similar ambitions.

Or maybe you’re just looking for an additional income stream.

Whatever your reason, I really can’t wait to help you get started and am looking forward to sharing the exact steps I took to start a blog that made money from day one with you!

1. How to Start a Blog on Siteground

What do I need to start a blog?

We need only two things to get going:

A Blogging Platform:

The service you’ll use to publish your blog content – in this case, WordPress.

Your blog hosting is the space where your website will be stored.

In English, it’s a little space on the internet you’ll rent from our host, SiteGround – kind of like renting an apartment!

Siteground Hosting Review

After experimenting with different platforms and seeing what other successful bloggers were using, I discovered that SiteGround is the best place to start a blog.

When you host a blog with SiteGround, you’re opting for the best blog hosting available!

When I made the switch from to a self-hosted site, I had trouble transferring my domain – a slow and technical process that made me wish I would have gone with a self-hosted blog from the start – exactly like the one we’re setting up for you here today!

However, with a simple phone call to SiteGround’s 24/7 support team, they took care of the remaining technical stuff I wasn’t able to do on my own!

For this reason alone, I always recommend SiteGround as the easiest way to start a blog from scratch – SiteGround’s incredible tech support is the best in the business and has helped me resolve all of my issues in three minutes or less.

Let’s choose the right hosting plan for your needs using the guide below.

Save 65% off all Siteground hosting plans

Pro Tip: I highly recommend choosing three years for a Siteground discount of up to $828 USD off!

startup, growbig, and gogeek plans at siteground are compared side by side with prices and features listed below each

Starting a WordPress Blog on Siteground

Step (1) Choose a Blog Hosting Plan

There are three different SiteGround hosting plans you can choose from.

In order from most basic to the most advanced, your options are:

If you want to start blogging on a budget, the StartUp plan is only $3.95 a month and a great choice to get going.

You’ll get hosting for one website, 10GB of Web Space, and up to 10,000 Visits Monthly!

I highly recommend the GrowBig plan as its a very reasonable price at $5.95 a month and offers the best bang for your buck:

  • Host multiple blogs
  • 20GB Web Space
  • 25,000 Visits Monthly
  • All Essential + Premium Features
  • Priority support

This is more than enough for those just starting out and will allow your blog to grow exponentially if you are willing to put the work in!

Have ideas for a few profitable blogs in mind? Then this plan is for you!

If you’ve already built somewhat of a following, or expect massive amounts of traffic from the start, the GoGeek plan starts at $11.95 a month, includes Advanced Features and can handle up to 100,000 monthly visits!

Step (2) Choosing a Domain Name

You want your blog name to be memorable and relevant to your niche!

So, ideally, try to stick with two or three words – and name your domain accordingly.

Be sure to also, choose a “.com” domain for your site!

Buying a Website Domain Name: Tips

A “.com” domain makes you look more reputable which, of course, builds trust, However, it’s also that much easier for blog readers to remember!

If you’re having difficulty choosing a blog domain name, consider using your own name if this is something you are comfortable with.

I chose Nikki Blogs for a few reasons:

  • Its easy to remember at 2 words long
  • It includes a keyword related to my "blog" niche
  • It describes what I do professionally!
  • 9/10 people spell my last name wrong!

Branding with your own name gives you an opportunity to showcase a unique and quirky side of yourself while leaving a bit more room to play with when it comes to niching down.

Let’s plug your new domain name into the Please Enter Your Domain field.

Now, we’ll wrap up the final details and move onto the final step.

Step (3) Fill In Your Account Info

Here comes the easy part!

Fill in your Account and Client Information.

Now, fill in your Payment Information.

Next, confirm your Purchase Information and be sure to choose at least a 12 month term to get that 70% off discount for your first year!

Now, choose whether or not to include a couple of Extra Services in the form of Domain Privacy and/or SG Site Scanner (I personally like the added security that these additional features offer but if you don’t need them, you can save a couple of bucks).

Check the box to confirm that you agree to SiteGround’s Terms of Service and click Pay Now to complete your purchase.

Change Permalink Settings

On your left sidebar menu, hover over Settings and select Permalinks.

WordPress gives you the opportunity to create a custom URL structure for both your permalinks and archives.

A great starting point would be Post name – using this Permalink structure will make it easy for your viewers to search for your articles when they want to review them and will help you rank in search engines later on!

Delete Default Items

Let’s remove unnecessary posts, widgets, and plugins!

Delete WordPress Posts

To remove posts, click the Posts tab in the left sidebar.

To delete all WordPress posts, click the box beside Title and select Move to Trash from the Bulk Actions menu. Click Apply.

If you’d rather keep a couple while you customize your WordPress theme, you can also delete multiple posts by choosing by choosing them individually.

Delete WordPress Plugins

To remove WordPress Plugins, hover over the Plugins tab in the left sidebar of your dashboard and choose Installed Plugins.

Click the box beside Plugin at the top left of your screen. Now, go back and deselect Elementor and SG Optimizer – these plugins are an essential plan of my blogging plan and I think you’ll enjoy them too!

Now, from Bulk Actions, select Deactivate and click Apply.

Once those plugins have been deactivated, you can go ahead and Delete them by once again choosing it from the Bulk Actions menu and clicking Apply.

Delete Meta Widget

From the Dashboard, hover over Appearance and click Widgets. Find the Meta widget box and click Delete.

Install WordPress Plugins

There are a few WordPress plugins that I recommend installing as soon as you get started on WordPress. You can even use the free versions to power your site! These include:

Yoast SEO

Optimize your blog for search engines the world’s top SEO plugin around.

Wordfence Security

Protect your blog with the most popular WordPress Firewall and Security Scanner.

Akismet Anti-Spam

Fight spam comment and emails while protecting your site from publishing malicious content.

To search, install, and activate WordPress plugins, move your cursor over to Plugins and click Add New in the Dashboard menu. Proceed to Install and Activate each one.

The first pages you should create are:

  • About me page

To setup your Blog and Home page, highlight Pages from the Dashboard and click All Pages to view them.

Click Edit on the page you want to adjust

screenshot of wordpress sidebar showing posts item highlighted and displaying all posts, add new, categories, and tags options

Now, see the button that says Edit with Elementor?

Let’s click that!

Elementor is a drag and drop website builder that will simplify your life ten-fold when it comes to writing and formatting a beautiful blog.

To add text, click and drag the Text Editor widget to the Drag widget here section in the middle of your site.

Delete the default text that appears here and start writing your heart out!

Pro Tip: Plan out and write your first ten blog posts before you launch your blog!

This will help you maintain readership by having enough articles for your readers to browse and enough internal links for you to use within your posts.

As bloggers, we want viewers to stay on and return to our sites. Having many well written articles on your blog one of. the best ways you can write a blog people want to read!

Choose a WordPress Blog Theme

To change your blog design, you’ll need to install a new WordPress Theme.

Your WordPress blog theme should mesh well with your niche and branding.

Consider checking out Creative Market or browsing this list of premium feminine WordPress blog themes for new bloggers to find one that fits your style.

Look past the pretty pictures, fonts, etc. and focus on the layout! You’ll be able to change those minor elements later on and very simply.

Premium themes are usually well maintained and offer helpful tutorials for support – I use a premium theme that I purchased on Creative Market.

Once you’ve determined which blog theme you’ll use, you’ll be able to Install it via your WordPress Dashboard.

Note: Free WordPress Themes are available within WordPress itself and are the only free WordPress themes for bloggers that I would recommend using.

Downloading free WordPress themes online can be risky and could put you at risk of malicious code and/or malware. Only use WordPress Themes from reputable sources!

3. How to Find Your Blog Niche

What should I start a blog about?

Even if you’re starting a lifestyle blog in 2019, choosing a blog niche – or at least narrowing down your interests – is still important!

All of your site visitors will not necessarily be interested in reading about all of the topics you are interested in – blogs with a focus tend to fair better than those without.

Consider picking topics that are closely related to one another and use them as categories for your blog.

In my case, the three main focuses of my blogging niche are: blogging, social media, and finance.

All of these topics are interlinked in the sense that I write about making and saving money within these categories.

When choosing your blog niche, consider the following:

  • What are you passionate about
  • You skill set and knowledge
  • Room for growth and profitability

The best blog to write is the one you can maintain!

4. How to Make Money from Your Blog

Some of the most popular methods for blog monetization include:

Affiliate Marketing

A business pays commissions to third-party websites for leads or sales.

Sponsored Posts/Brand Partnerships

Sponsors pay a third-party to create/show an ad on their website.

Displaying ads on one’s website where they are paid per view and/or click.

Offering Services

Work as a freelancer offering your skill set or knowledge to create, write, organize, etc.

Selling Digital Products

Offer pre-made products available for purchase/download.

To make money blogging from day one, I utilized affiliate marketing and ads as well as offering services including photography, social media marketing, website design, and freelance writing on my blog.

Read more on blog monetization strategies to see how you can implement them into your blogging business plan.

5. Creating a Brand for Yourself

This is something I consider to be one of the most essential “how to start a blog” tips.

Consider the following when starting your branding process:

How do you want your blog to be perceived?

How do you want to make people feel when they experience your content?

Like a beautiful, cohesive Instagram feed, a blog with clear branding not only makes you look more professional, it builds trust in your audience.

You know who you are and therefore your readers know that they can count on you to deliver consistency.

Start with something as simple as your colour palette:

How many colours will you use?

What are you main colours? What are your accent colours?

What font will you use?

Are you more modern or traditional?
text reads nikki in black and blogs in pink against light pink blob background

How do you want your logo to look?

Do you want to have it designed for you or use an app to generate it? Will you have a slogan? I love using unique hand lettered fonts in my branding!

Will you take your own photos or use stock photos?

Start considering some of the basics now and look like a pro from the get-go. Remember, first impressions count!

  2. Hi, thank you for all this great information! I’m super new to this. I’m still in my first month of blogging. I don’t get much time to work on my blog being I have a baby and 3 other kids running around so I’m super happy to have found your website! Very beneficial to me! -Crystal

    • You’re very welcome, Crystal 🙂 I’m so glad that my blog has helped you! Managing children and a blog is definitely not easy. I only have one right now and still always plan to do the majority of my work during naps and bedtime! You are a super mama with four little ones, wow! I’m in the midst of publishing a post just for parent bloggers – tasks you can do in relation to blogging and social media and how to make it all work in between kids and life! Congratulations on your first month of blogging, it’s the first step in an amazing journey xo

  3. After reading this beautiful piece of informative article I got fully motivated, now looking forward to accelerating something. Thank you!!
