Every December, I get so excited to share special Christmas messages with those I love… but then immediately freeze when I remember I still have to write something!
You’d think after writing cards and gift tags for years it would get easier, but nope.
Half the time I’d end up staring at the blank card in front of me longer than it took me to pick it out in the first place!
If you’ve ever done the same thing (I’m guessing yes since you’re here reading this, haha), I’ve written a big list of Christmas card messages you can borrow below 🙂
Some are sweet, some are funny, and some are meant to remind us that Jesus is the reason for the season!
I’ve added in a few personal favorites and little things I’ve actually written in my own cards too.

Coming Up with a Special Christmas Card Message
This shouldn’t be a complicated process but you can touch on three things to make your message writing a little easier when you can:
1. Say Something Personal
Even tiny little detail makes a card feel that much more thoughtful – and the recipient feel that much more special!
“I’ll never the kids’ gingerbread house disaster from last year. Still makes me laugh!”
“I love singing Christmas songs with you and hearing you play guitar. You’ve inspired me to want to learn to play an instrument too.”
“Those Christmas cookies you made last year were fantastic. I”ve been looking forward to your baking ever since!”
2. Add a Warm Thought
Something kind, or grateful, or encouraging.
“I’m really thankful for your friendship. You’ve brightened so many of my days this year.”
“It’s been such a busy year but I’m so grateful for all of those little moments we had together. I love that we get to slow down over the holidays and enjoy days like today!”
3. Close With Hope
Christmas practically writes this part for us.
“Praying this season brings peace to your home and lots of energy for the year ahead.”
“May the holidays bring you a renewed strength, sweet surprises, and so many reason to rejoice!”
“Wishing you gentle days, answered prayers, and new beginnings in this new year ahead!”
Try no to overthink it.
Honestly, some of the most well received messages I’ve written were the ones I didn’t fuss over – you know, the ones you hide in the bathroom with a pen to write 5 minutes before you present your loved one the card stuff, haha!

Christmas Card Messages for Family
Writing to family always makes me sentimental because they’re the people I love and joke with the most, so the tone can go either way.
For Parents
- “I love the time we get together and the memories we make, especially over the holidays”
- “Thank you for bringing such joy to our lives and for making the kids feel so special!”
- “You’ve made Christmas feel so warm every single year – thank you for being exactly who you are! I couldn’t ask for better parents.”
- “You gave us so many amazing Christmas memories and now I’m working on recreating those with my kids too!”
- “We appreciate you more than you will ever know and the holidays always remind us just how much you’ve given – love, joy, and wonderful memories, today and always! We love you.”
For Siblings
- “Still my favorite partner in cookie related crimes.”
- “Remember the egg nog incident of 2017?”

For Grandparents

Friends are such a great part of life and writing to them can sometimes feel more natural because of how casual and fun friendships tend to be.
Heartfelt
- “You’ve been such a blessing in my life this year. Thank you for always being there!”
- “So grateful for your friendship – seriously, I don’t know what I would do without you.”
- “Hope this season brings you relaxing moments, warm drinks, plus lots of joy – and Christmas cookies!”
Funny
- “Wishing you a Christmas full of cookies that don’t burn, naps you don’t have to fight for, toys that come with batteries, and Christmas photos where everyone’s actually looking at the camera – without blinking!”
- “May your wrapping paper always be long enough on the first try.”
- “Here’s to a Christmas where the tape cuts cleanly and doesn’t fold over on itself.”

Long-Distance
- “I wish we lived closer, especially at this time of year. I miss our visits!”

Short and Simple Christmas Messages
These are great when you need something quick – teachers, neighbors, your acquaintance from the kids’ gymnastics class… you know the ones.

Closing Notes on Writing Christmas Card Messages
Christmas cards don’t have to be perfect. Write your message from the heart and you’ll be bound to reach the hearts of those you love too – because a few special words have the power to make someone’s entire day!
