This is going to be a super short article but total game changer! I knew as soon as I figured these tricks out that I needed to share them with you all.
Have you ever seen those beautifully formatted Instagram captions with gaps between paragraphs? Not only is this less intimidating to read for your followers, it will gain you more engagement since it’ll be much easier to follow along with what you’ve taken the time to write!
If you’re like me, you too probably skip the huge blobs of text and quickly skim through those that are neatly organized only going back to the start of the caption if it’s something that’s genuinely intrigued you. We all do it! Most people, myself included, follow hundreds of other accounts (usually for image inspiration) but rarely take the time to read what their captions. So, it’s crucial to not only have strong images but also strong written presentation!
Line breaks will help you get there but how come they don’t work sometimes? There are three basic reasons for this: (1) Not using a note taking app to draft captions, (2) Leaving spaces after text or punctuation marks before a line break is to start, and (3) Not copying your draft caption exactly as it is when moving it to the insert caption section of your prospective Instagram post.
Whether you choose to do it with keyboard characters, emojis, or clean blank space, line breaks will elevate your Instagram game! So, let’s start with the basic rules of creating working line breaks in Instagram captions.
(1) Write Your Captions on a Notes Application
I personally use the Notes App on my iPhone 8 Plus (or Macbook Air) and love how easy it is to format. Additionally, the larger the device you are writing on, the more of an overview you can get of your caption as a whole.
Anyone who follows me on Instagram knows that I’m a bit of an emoji addict (after all, a picture is worth a thousand words, right?)! So, sometimes, when I’m looking at my overall caption, I’ll feel the need to take it back a bit and cut out a few of those cute little icons.
You may also feel the need to cut down on things like exclamation marks, ellipsis, or other punctuation marks, in addition to moving paragraphs around in your caption to create smoother thought and word flow.
(2) Make Sure to Leave Absolutely NO SPACES After the Last Word in Each Paragraph
This is probably one of the most crucial things you can do to GUARANTEE even line breaks in your Instagram captions! While now and then, I still have trouble getting Instagram to give me line breaks with simple, beautiful white space, if using an emoji like a check mark or heart or a punctuation mark like a period, I can assure you that your line will break if you go over your caption with your text cursor to make sure there are NO SPACES after any punctuation marks or words, depending on how you choose to finish your paragraphs.
(3) Decide What Kind of Line Breaks You’d Like to See
As mentioned briefly about, decide on whether you’d like to attempt clean white space, an emoji, or punctuation mark (my preference, it’s cleaner than emojis and more reliable than attempting true white space – I always find there’s a 50/50 shot of this actually working and hate the idea of big chunks of text appearing in my captions before I have the chance to edit it) and insert it into the corresponding body of your text.
(4) Copy and Paste Your Caption from the Notes App Directly to Your Upcoming Instagram Post
Once you have finished writing out and editing your Instagram caption to your liking, hit Select All on the Notes App and Copy to get it ready for transferring.
Open up the corresponding image on Instagram, choose your filter, do any additional edits, and then paste your text from the notes app into the caption section. For added assurance, do another once over with your text cursor and make sure that there are no spaces after your text and line break marks (emoji/punctuation mark, as discussed above). Keep in mind that if you need to do any edits to your text, do it in the notes app or your line breaks might not appear as they do now!
(5) Share Your Instagram Post
Once you’re satisfied with the image and overall look of your caption, hit the Share button and enjoy admiring your hard work!
